Who treats ingrown toenail

An ingrown toenail is a common condition that occurs when the corner or side of a toenail grows into the skin of the toe. While an ingrown toenail can be painful, proper care and treatment can prevent further damage and help the nail heal. In this essay, we will discuss the cause and symptoms of ingrown toenails, and how to treat them for relief.

Cause

Ingrown toenails can develop for a variety of reasons. Poorly-fitting shoes are one of the most common causes, as these can put direct pressure onto the toe and encourage the toenail to curl downwards into the flesh surrounding the nail bed. Trimming the toenail too short or rounded can also cause the nail to ingrow, as can cutting the toenail incorrectly using sharp instruments. Other factors, such as genetic or hormonal irregularities, can also contribute to the condition. It is important to identify the cause of the ingrown toenail in order to avoid reoccurrence.

Symptoms

Ingrown toenails typically present with the following symptoms: redness and tenderness of the skin near the toenail, pain that increases when pressure is applied to the affected area, inflammation and swelling of the affected toe, and a blocked-off feeling around the edge of the toenail.

Treatment

In mild cases of ingrown toenail, lifestyle changes such as adopting a more accommodating pair of shoes, changing the way the toenail is trimmed, and resting the affected toe can usually provide relief.

Soaking the affected foot in warm, soapy water can also help to reduce inflammation and ease discomfort.

For more serious cases, professional treatment may be necessary. This may involve draining the infected area, followed by removal of the nail edge. In some cases, the entire nail may need to be surgically removed to prevent recurrence. Post-operative care involves keeping the wound clean and dry, and administering antibiotics and other medications as prescribed by the podiatrist.

Ingrown toenails can be painful and uncomfortable, but proper management can often alleviate symptoms. Patients should take care to identify the cause of the ingrown toenail, and modify lifestyle and behavior accordingly.

Treatment may involve a variety of methods, but the goal is always to ensure that the nail is properly aligned, to reduce discomfort and prevent reoccurrence. With the proper care and attention, an ingrown toenail can be successfully treated at home or through professional medical intervention (podiatrist)
