When ingrown toenail is infected

When ingrown toenail is infected

An ingrown toenail is a fairly common condition that results when the edges of a toenail grow into the skin of the toe. It most commonly affects the big toe and often causes discomfort, redness, and swelling.

When an ingrown toenail becomes infected, it can be particularly uncomfortable and even dangerous if left untreated.

When an ingrown toenail is infected, the area around the nail may be red, swollen, and filled with pus. The toe may also be warm to the touch and painful to the point of not being able to walk.

The infection can range from mild to severe and ultimately lead to complications like abscesses or even blood infections.

The most common cause of infection in an ingrown toenail is a bacterium called Pseudomonas aeruginosa. This bacteria is often found naturally on the skin and finds its way into the nail bed and skin surrounding the nail when the toenail begins to grow into the skin.

It is essential to take steps to prevent infection from occurring if you have an ingrown toenail. Steps include keeping your feet clean and dry, avoiding ill-fitting shoes, wearing protective footwear when playing sports, and trimming toenails straight across.

If an ingrown toenail is already infected, the best treatment is to see your podiatrist. They will be able to provide treatment and advise on how to prevent future infections. Treatment may involve warm compresses to reduce swelling, topical or oral antibiotics, or minor surgery to remove the infected area.

If the infection is severe, hospitalisation or IV antibiotics may be necessary.  In some cases, it may be necessary to completely remove the toenail to get rid of the infection.

However, this should only be done by a Podiatrist and is considered a last resort.  In most cases, taking simple precautions and seeing a Podiatrist if an infection occurs is all that is needed to treat and prevent an infected ingrown toenail.

If you believe your ingrown toenail may be infected, don't hesitate to seek medical care. Prompt treatment can avoid pain, further infection, and potentially more serious complications.
