Is heel pain a sign of diabetes?

Heel pain is a common symptom for many health conditions, however it is not a major sign of diabetes. Diabetes is actually a collection of metabolic diseases that cause high blood sugar levels, which can have serious consequences if left untreated.

However, its important to note that heel pain may be a sign that diabetes is present. Diabetes can affect the nerves in the feet, which can lead to a pins-and-needles feeling or a burning sensation. Over time, this can lead to a loss of sensation in the feet, meaning you may not notice any issues until it is too late.

Nerve issues can also cause severe heel pain, and in cases of diabetes, this pain can often be debilitating.  If you are experiencing heel pain, it is important to speak to your podiatrist. Diabetic foot pain can worsen if left untreated, leading to further issues and even amputation in extreme cases.

A podiatrist can examine you and determine whether or not diabetes is the root cause of your heel pain.  In most cases, however, heel pain is the result of an injury or health condition without any ties to diabetes. It often resolves itself with rest and at-home treatments, such as ice, arch supports and stretching.

If the pain does not dissipate over time, however, it is important to speak to your podiatrist.  Heel pain is an indication that something is wrong and should not be ignored.

If you are experiencing pain for a prolonged period of time, it is important to speak to your doctor and rule out any serious underlying causes.

Though heel pain is rarely an indication of diabetes, it may be a sign depending on the circumstances. If you are experiencing heel pain, it is best to speak to a medical professional to get a diagnosis and proper treatment.
