Ingrown toenail with diabetes

An ingrown toenail can be a serious condition that can effect anyone, however, it can be especially worrisome for patients diagnosed with diabetes.

Diabetes has a tendency to weaken the immune system, making the patient more prone to infection, particularly in the feet.

An ingrown toenail can be incredibly painful and can lead to a severe infection.   It is important for patients with diabetes to practice good foot care as untreated infections can cause more serious issues such as decreased foot sensitivity, leading to ulcer formation, tissue destruction, and even amputation.

In order to prevent issues with ingrown toenails, proper footwear is essential for people with diabetes. Shoes that offer good support and enough room for the toes should be worn at all times.

Individuals with diabetes should be especially aware of any changes in their toenails, such as redness and swelling, as this can signify an infection or ingrown toenail. If redness and swelling occur, it is essential to seek medical attention as soon as possible to prevent further damage.

During a podiatry visit, your podiatrist may use one of three options for treating an ingrown toenail. The first option is to remove the ingrown portion of the nail. This can be done simply by cutting the nail and removing the ingrown portion.

The second option is to use a chemical compound to cause the nail to grow in a different way or not to grow.

The third option is to permanently remove the nail via a surgical procedure. A podiatrist can discuss the various options to determine the most appropriate treatment for the patient.

In summary, people with diabetes should take extra care of their feet, practicing foot health on a daily basis to prevent issues like an ingrown toenail. If redness and swelling occurs, it is important to seek immediate medical attention. Depending on the severity of the condition, the podiatrist may use one of three treatment options to cure the condition. Taking care of feet is essential for those with diabetes.
