Ingrown toenail and fungus

Ingrown toenail and fungus

An ingrown toenail and fungus can be two very irritating issues to deal with. Ingrown toenails are caused when the edge of your toenail grows into the flesh of your toe and can be caused from footwear that doesnt fit correctly, or when toenails are cut too short or incorrectly.

Ingrown toenails cause pain and inflammation, and in some instances can become infected if not treated.

Fungal infections are also a common issue that can cause an ingrown toenail. Fungus forms in warm, moist environments, and when trapped in the shoe can quickly accumulate on the skin and toenail. This can cause an infection and irritation, as well as a thick yellow or green discoloration of the toenail.

In some cases, if left untreated the infection can spread to other parts of your body.  Fortunately, there are several treatments for both ingrown toenails and fungal infections.

If a fungus is the cause of the ingrown toenail, a topical antifungal cream can be used to treat the condition. If an ingrown toenail is left untreated, however, the nail may have to be removed surgically. This can be very painful and should only be done if the infection is severe.

To prevent both ingrown toenails and fungal infections, it is important to keep your feet clean and dry. Wear shoes that fit properly without squeezing your toes, and dont wear the same pair more than once a week. Change your socks often, and wear breathable, absorbent materials. Dont wear sandals or open-toe shoes for extended periods of time, and get regular podiatry care to stay on top of any potential issues.

Both ingrown toenails and fungal infections can be annoying and painful if not taken care of properly. If you find yourself dealing with either condition, its important to speak with your podiatrist about a treatment plan to resolve the issue quickly and safely.

By taking preventative measures and understanding the causes of both conditions, you can reduce your chances of ever having to deal with them in the future.
