Why would I join a Pilates studio when I am a member of a gym?

So why would you join Pilates reformers? What's the difference?

Many clients choose to be a member of reformer studios and gyms, and many reformer studios around the world may not require you to become a member, similar to the options we have at The Rehab Hub in Glasgow. The primary difference is that your big corporate gyms generally do not offer reformers to do equipment-based sessions.

The instruction you get will be very general too. That's not to say there isn't excellent teaching or training from these gyms or instructors working there. It's just that it's different. The difference between the gym and the specialised Pilates studio is that they specialise in Pilates. They utilise the reformer and, in many, comprehensive studios. They use all the repertoires of the Pilates method by Joseph Pilates, the creator of the Pilates method.

Our studio and Clinic in Kinning Park, Glasgow, offers reformer classes, but we are also what's known as a comprehensive studio. This means we have all of the equipment available in the Pilates method. Our instructors generally will start with a minimum level three qualification in Pilates instruction. So it will usually begin with their mat training. And then, from there, they go on and start undertaking mentorship and training on the Pilates equipment, generally starting with the reformer. So the entire training typically takes two years after they have completed their basic level 3 Mat Pilates Training.

The primary difference in commercial gyms is if you have Pilates on your timetable, it will usually be mat-based Pilates. Mat-based Pilates is an excellent form of the method but is just one small part of the Pilates Method. You also have to consider whether the instructor teaching the Pilates method in your commercial gym is trained in the Pilates method. Not all training providers and courses are equal. And there is no governing governance around someone saying they are teaching Pilates, but they've had little or no training in the method. Sad to say there are some course you can do in just a few hours on online training. 

To answer the question, why would you want to join a Pilates studio if you already have a gym membership is down to if you want to do the Pilates method to its full potential and achieve the results possible from the Pilates method.

If your answer is yes to that and you wish to get specialised training on the Pilates method, we advise joining or taking sessions in your local Pilates specialised studio.

Things to ask your teacher to make sure you are getting a great teacher:

  1. Where they completed their training?
  2. What course did they take?
  3. How long was the course?
  4. Did they undertake mentorship as part of their training, with who and for how long?

These questions allow you to make an informed decision about your teacher, their training, qualifications and experience.

Additional pints to consider

While you may be a member of a gym, there are some very good reasons why you should consider joining a Pilates studio.   

First and foremost, Pilates is a specialized form of exercise that requires a specific skill set to properly execute the various exercises. While there may be instructors at the gym who can teach you some basic moves, Pilates studios typically have highly trained instructors that can provide detailed instruction on the techniques and ideas of Pilates. This type of instruction will enable you to reap the fullest benefits from the practice.   

In addition, Pilates studios typically have a range of different equipment that is specifically designed for Pilates. While it may be possible to do some basic moves on your own, having the right equipment at your disposal can make all the difference when it comes to maximizing the results of your practice. For instance, reformers, foam rollers, and various stretching bands are among the most useful pieces of equipment to use in Pilates.  

Finally, Pilates studios often provide a welcoming, comforting atmosphere. Not only do the instructors provide technical and emotional support to help you progress in your practice, but they also foster a community of enthusiastic and committed practitioners. So, not only is Pilates great exercise, but it can also be an immensely satisfying social experience.   In conclusion, for those interested in getting the most out of their Pilates practice, joining a Pilates studio is often the best way to go. Between the expert instruction, the specialized equipment, and the supportive atmosphere, you'll get to experience the best that Pilates has to offer.
